Technology Project Proposal

  • Date: June 10, 2015

  • Technology Project Title:

    • Non-Native Children Left Behind: Second Language Learners & Standardized Assessments

  • Project Focus: What topic will you explore for this project?

    • I hope to construct and share observations and discoveries of the current research in regards to validity and reliability of standardized testing of ELL students and explore alternatives.

  • Learning Goals: Why are you interested in researching this topic? What do you hope to learn from working on this project? How might this Technology Project enhance your teaching skills?

    • My interest in the validity of standardized assessments regarding ELLs comes from the large amount of time I have spent either “teaching to the test” or proctoring the actual test. When the testing window opens, my instructional time is often taken away and replaced with proctoring ELL testing for about a month. I am passionate about further researching this topic because it has been heartbreaking for me to witness some students struggle with standardized assessments and fail in a language that they are labeled as learning. I hope to learn more about the relationship between ELLs and standardized assessment as well as how to construct an educational website. I have avoided making a class website because I wasn't sure how to do it or how to utilize it. This project will give me an opportunity to practice a skill that I can use for teaching in the next school year. I would love to have my students make websites about research topics as my district continues to grow into a digital one.

  • Technology Project Type: What sort of end product will be produced as you work on this Technology Project? For example, will your Technology Project lead to the creation of a web site, an online blog, a wiki, an online course unit, a teaching lesson plan, or something else?

    • I plan on producing a website regarding ELLs and standardized assessment. I would like to link it to my class page as an example of a website based on research for my secondary students.

  • Technology Project Components: List the different parts of the project you expect to have to create so you will have a good idea of how much work you need to do for the project

    • I will include at least 10 pages:

      • an overview section

      • a section on background information (10 pages)

      • a section on famous researchers of ELLs and standardized assessments

      • a section on introducing common standardized language assessments

      • a section on what SBAC is

      • a section of videos with teacher perspectives

      • a section of videos on student perspectives

      • a website creator section

      • a personal interest statement

      • a references list

  • Technology Project Background Information: Describe what you will write about for the background information part of your project. If you have written about this topic before, explain how you will add to your past work in new ways.

    • I did a previous paper on this topic last summer for Dr. Park's Second Language Literacy class. I would like to use that paper, but update it with new sources and information, especially after using SBAC this year.

  • Technology Project Timeline: Sketch out a rough outline of how long the Technology Project will last. Assign each component of the project a rough amount of time needed for its completion.

    • I plan on doing 5 sections by this weekend and the other 5 by the following weekend.

  • Questions: If you have questions about your Technology Project, please ask me in this section.
